Which wood could I use for the base of a smoker?
I am refurbing an offset smoker. The metal pole legs take away from the welded steel look of the barrel and fire box. I am way better with wood than metal. I have seen people make stands out of wood for the Big Green Egg and Bullet water smokers, and I'd like to make a cabinet style base for my offset. The fire box gets real hot, but that would not come in contact with the wood. The main barrel or cooking chamber of the smoker would rest on the wood, and that only gets to 300 degrees tops.
I would go with an oak or a hickory and line the inside with some flashing or something like that.
