How to dry Charcoal art?
So I find my art to be best when working with charcoal, but I can never really do anything with my pieces because charcoal is super messy and tends to turn everything black it touches. I tried hairspray on one of my pieces, but it didn't seem to work. Does anyone have any other ideas on what I could do to maybe coat my painting so that the coloring wont smear and charcoal wont get everywhere?
I hate it when people suggest hairspray!
Use Workable Fixative only! I like Krylon best but there are other brands that are very good too.
Understand that with charcoal and pastel you can spray too much on. It is not like varnishing a piece of wood! The more you spray on the more your work gets muddied and the colors run together or become transparent. So in the end fixative helps with the worst of the smudging but expect to still have to protect your work with a temporary cover sheet and eventually matting and framing under glass.
Many pastel artists will spray their work one last time just before the final details and highlights go on.
