I am taking laptop on vacation and I have some questions...?
I want to take my laptop with me on vacation, I am staying stateside, and I am wondering if I have to buy a prepaid internet card (I know that is not the right term) or is there a website I can purchase internet use from...I also need to know if I have to register my laptop to take it on a plane.
I will be in Oregon for two weeks and other than trying to find a wifi hotspot in every little town, I want to but time in bulk...(Man I hope I make sense, b/c I sure have confused myself even more.)
Basically, I want to use the internet while we are driving across Oregon, what do I need to buy in order to be able to do this? If it matters I have an Acer laptop, and no, I have no idea what model....Hope anyone can help. Thank You!
WiFi in Oregon can be tricky. If the towns you are going to are to small, your only WiFi may be the connections using the cell phone plans. I define a town as "too small" if it doesn't have a McDonalds. But the cell phone plans can be tricky in these towns too, as I know the GPRS aircards (how you connect your laptop to a cell phone carrier for Internet access) will only work where there is really strong cell phone signals. The aircard is about $250 and then you have to have a service plan, which varies by cell phone carrier.
Far less expensive is to check for Internet cafe's and (surprise), McDonald's restaurants whereever you are going. McDonald's now has hotspots even in places like Reedsport and Coos Bay. McDonalds uses iPass, which you can buy in advance and use at any McDonalds equiped with WiFi. Most of the cafe's with access are free. You can also ask the Chamber of Commerce in the towns you'll be visiting if they know where hotspots are - some towns have set them up so that the downtown area has a zone where there is access for free (Coos Bay and Lebanon being two of them). Another place that often has free access is motels that offer it with their rooms. And most motels seem to have it now, even if they don' have it on their billboards. The best service I know of for tracking where the hotspots are is at CNet (http://cnet.jiwire.com/), which shows 1626 locations in Oregon in their database, indicating those that are free.
If you go with a cell phone plan, the two I am aware of that work on the south coast are T-Mobile and Edgewireless/AT&T.
So you know what to ask for, here's what Edgewireless says about their aircards:
"Wireless Internet Access is available to laptop and PDA users with GPRS Aircards. The Aircards plug into the PCMCIA cards slot on laptop computer or PDA device. Install the software client included with the Aircard on to the compatible device and now you can surf the internet, collect email or access important corporate information wirelessly."
I would take a look at the CNet listing, see which cities you will be visiting and if they have free access or not, and decide from there. I would probably NOT go with an aircard unless you would also use it at home.
