How do I get the rust off of my cast iron grill grates?
I have a grill that I would love to use again. Unfortunatly after sitting for the winter the grates are all rusted up. I tried to find replacement grates but no one seems to have the size I need. Is there any way to clean the rust off of the ones I already have?
There are a lot of different products you can use to remove the rust, like Naval Jelly, CLR, and even some oven cleaners have rust removers in them, or you can wire brush it off with a lot of effort. If you use a chemical, just be sure to rinse and then dry them thoroughly (to prevent the rust from coming back). Once you have cleaned them, you can use a rust encapsulating spray primer followed by high heat paint to keep from repeating the process next year. Also, invest in a grill cover.
